Horseback riding in the mountains

Riding in the mountains offers an adventure in extraordinary surroundings and is a once in a lifetime experience.

One day or several days

We use Icelandic horses which are reliable, steady and very well trained. Our trips accomodate both beginners and experienced riders, children and adults. The age limit for attending a riding trip is 12 years alone and 10 years with a parent.

Before we start riding, we make sure that everyone is familiar with their horse by grooming and saddeling it. A short grooming and riding lesson will be given. During the trip we divide the riders into groups based on experience. If you would like, you will get the opportunity to try both tölt, trot and canter. You can book a day trip or stay for several days, with accomodation in the hotel.

We are the only place in the world that offers musk ox safari on horseback! This trip takes place every Thursday and Saturday and is for people with some experience in riding.

Riding season is from approximately the 10th of June until approximately the 1th of October. From week 33 the trips are on weekends only.

Day trips

Meeting point is outside the stable at 09.30 am. There you will get a horse, and learn how to groom and saddle it for approximately one hour, before we begin the trip. Bring a lunch pack and hot/cold drinks. We will be back at the stable around 04.00 pm. You can borrow a helmet and saddle bags.

Since we use Icelandic horses, which are somewhat small in size, the maximum weight limit for attending a day trip is 90 kg.

Sleep well in crisp mountain air

One or several nights in fresh, crisp mountain air is good for you! We have hotel rooms, apartments, a pilegrim hut and camping facilities. You can eat at our restaurant or cater for yourself, whatever you prefer.

Hotel rooms

The rooms in the hotel were built in 1992 and renovated in 2020. We have four single rooms and 22 double rooms situated in the main building, next to the reception and restaurant. The rooms include breakfast, bed linen and towels, as well as a private bathroom with shower and wc, TV, and free wifi.

Apartments

The annex have 12 apartments built in 2014, and are available to rent all year round. Each unit have 1-2 bedrooms with family bunk beds (150 cm lower berth and 90 cm upper berth), bathroom, kitchen, living room, free wifi and a common porch with a jaccuzzi. For the apartments you can either bring your own or rent bed linen and towels. End cleaning can be booked unless you want to clean after yourself.

Camping facilities

Our camping facilities have room for 40 caravans or tents, spread between three levels, overlooking the horses, mountains and Hjerkinndammen. Power points are found on each level, and shower facilities and kitchen are placed in a newly renovated (2021) sanitary house.

Pilegrim hut

The pilegrim hut is a small, cosy timber hut situated between the reception and the camping facilities. It contains five beds and has electricity. Showers, wc and a small kitchen is found in the camping facilities nearby. The pilegrim hut is for those travelling alone on a budget and wish to share accomodation.

Experience Dovrefjell

We are situated in the middle of Norway and have the mountains on our doorstep, with high altitude tops and quiet valleys. Great experiences are everywhere!

The Pilegrim route travels through our courtyard, and there are many hiking routes. Places for overnight accomodation in Dovrefjell, Rondane and Dovrefjell national park are situated one day hike from us.

The musk ox is the most exotic creature you can meet at Dovrefjell. We recommend a guided trip, either on foot, arranged every day in the summer season by our neighbours at Hjerkinnhus or Furuhaugli, or on horseback every Thursday and Saturday by us.

Hjerkinn Fjellstue and Fjellriding is the only place in the world offering musk ox safari on horseback!
